Technology has changed how we communicate, operate our companies, and has become a vital element of our day-to-day operations. One proven technology being adopted at an ever-increasing rate is Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). VoIP lets anyone place phone calls over an internet connection. As broadband service has grown, VoIP has become the go-to choice for phone service for both consumers and businesses.

In this post, we will define VoIP and explain how it works.

What Exactly is Voice Over Internet Protocol?

VoIP or Voice over Internet Protocol is a digital phone system for placing and receiving calls via the internet allowing you to make a call directly from a computer, a VoIP phone, or other data-driven device.

A VoIP system requires a broadband (high speed Internet) connection and a computer, adaptor, or specialized phone. Some VoIP services only work over your computer or a special VoIP phone, while others allow you to use a traditional phone connected to a VoIP adapter.

When switching from a traditional landline to VoIP you can ask for number porting which lets you keep your existing business phone number.

How VoIP Works

IP telephony is a major upgrade from the old analog telecommunications system. When placing or receiving a call with VoIP, the conversation is broken down into small pieces of data and exchanged using these small data packets. The data packets are sent via the internet and can travel anywhere in the world in less than a second. When using Voice over Internet Protocol, these packets travel between your phone and a VoIP provider.

How VoIP Works in Four Steps

  1. Your telephone connects to your switch or router in your LAN (Local Area Network).
  2. When you dial, your IP phone tells your service provider to call the other party.
  3. Your VoIP service establishes the connection and exchanges data packets between phones.
  4. Your VoIP phone converts these digital signals back into sound you can hear.

With a cloud-based PBX system, you’ll enjoy features like:

  • Cost savings and scalability
  • More advanced features such as auto attendants, custom caller ID, voicemail to email and call routing
  • Increased portability and flexibility
  • Better overall voice and call quality

A VoIP system makes it easy for your team to communicate, collaborate and engage with one another no matter where they are.
